Feliz Dominican Day!

Mi Tierra

Mi Tierra is where I find my soul.
It's where some of my people have forgotten where their Tierra really is.
It's in the Caribbean, but more importantly ourTierra is in our hearts.
This Tierra is called la Republica Dominicana.
The Dominican Republic.
Dejama eplicartelo major.
Let me break it down for you.
All I hear is....
"Our government is trying to build a train
but how if the light in the country can't sustain"
"Why is every president worse
This country always staying poor must be a curse."
Stop Whining and do something about it.
I wish my people could move toward looking forward to what we can do
make our Tierra better.
I wish that there could be light
It's like everyone is losing sight.
Mi Tierra should become our Tierra because Dominicans have forgotten
where they come from.
We have Americanized our music, our culture, and our roots.
Reggeaton isn't ours, ladies and gentlemen merengue and Bachata is.
Our culture doesn't consist of us standing in the streets being the
queens and kings of these illegal things.
Our roots isn't about males with earrings and pregnant 15 year olds
Our roots are about people that did something for our Tierra,
Juan Pablo Duarte and Las Hermanas Mirabales.
We need to get past of the fact that we are a poor country
It seems like that's all we want to see.
We are black, white, tan, curly, straight, tall, short, homosexual, heterosexual people.
We aren't like everyone else because we come from THE TIERRA.
Recuérda...recuérda means to remember, it's something we have
forgotten to do.
We must recordar that we once stood by each other.
Some of us get to this country and find the easy way out, selling drugs.
Whatever happened to making quipes and empanadas just to pay the rent and
and to send a little bit of what we have to our Tierra.
My father once told me to never be ashamed of whom I am.
I am a Dark-skinned Hispanic woman in a sexist and racist world.
And my hair cure is curled.
He also told me that all I am is what mi Tierra made me.
Now my father is no longer on this earth
but I know where I came from and where I'm going since birth.
Its people like him that help me remember
because to remember is to know who you are
and who I am is una dominicana,
a Dominican woman.
So dominicanos please stand up and be proud of that Tierra.
And the next time somebody wants to say haha you're a dumb in a can
You say I am a Dominican that can!

I wrote that poem, not today but just one day that I was inspired and was thinking about my people and the struggle we have gone through and the struggle we still go through today but we can make it because we come from la Tierra! Anyways today is Dominican Independence day and what did we get independence from? We basically got independence from Haiti and declared ourself an independent country as the proud and beautiful island of the Dominican Republic.

I must admit that going to DR every year, whether it be summer time or spring break, I always have a GREAT time and LEARN a lot. There's always something new to learn when I'm over there. I have soo much fun just chyllen in those beautiful beaches we have. I just gotta say that where I am from in DR is Samana and I don't think I've ever seen a place sooooo BEAUTIFUL. Besides DR being beautiful it's just an amazing place to be. The people care about eachother unlike new yorkers. There must be something good about a country if everyone can leave there front door open and people hardly EVER steel. Of course my country isn't perfect but I do love it and just as I was raised over there I want my kids to be raised in mi TIERRA.

Happy Dominican Republic Independence Day! Brugal time! :)

peace out!
